Eligibility Requirements for Private Pilot

  • Be at least 17 years old.
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.
  • Receive the ground training and pass the FAA knowledge test.
  • Receive the required flight training and pass the FAA practical test.
  • Hold at least a third-class medical certificate.

Flight Experience Requirements for Private Pilot

  • Total 40 hours of flight time.
  • 20 hours of flight training from an authorized flight instructor.
  • 10 hours of solo flight.
  • Although FAA requires 40 hours minimum flight time, the national average is 60 to 80 hours depending on each person's progress.

Estimated Cost for Private Pilot

The training cost for the aircraft rental and the instructor fee is around $10,000 to $12,000. It doesn't include the medical examination fee, FAA knowledge test, the checkride fee, and the student pilot kit.
